Sipayik is the coastal home of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, a peninsula community in Maine where Passamaquoddy culture, language and fishing traditions continue today.
Sipayik, meaning "along the edge" in Maliseet-Passamaquoddy, is home to the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Sipayik (Pleasant Point). The name Passamaquoddy comes from pestomuhkatiyik, "people of the pollock-spearing place." The Passamaquoddy have lived in this region for 10,000 to 14,000 years. The reservation sits on a peninsula, with the Little River and Passamaquoddy Bay to the east and Cobscook Bay to the west, and borders Eastport and Perry.
Sipayik has long been a seasonal fishing village, and it is still central to the Tribe's identity and way of life. Each August the community holds a three-day Indian Days celebration. The Waponahki Museum shows photographs, baskets, art and language materials. The Tribal Government's mission is to safeguard the Passamaquoddy People, their culture and their territory.
Sipayik received federal recognition in 1976, and its current constitution was adopted in 1990. Together with Indian Township, Sipayik forms the Joint Tribal Council. Community services include:
